Brief: The purpose for this project was design our own custom font, determine appropriate character proportions, and create a display booklet. The requirements were to include both upper and lower case alphabets as well as numbers, punctuation marks and unique characters.
The project began with the creation of 26 acrylic-pour paintings on canvas. Each canvas was original in color and style, purposely designed for each letter. A needle-nose paint dripper was utilized in the design of each character of the alphabet, allowing for an original, custom appearance. After isolating each letter, the canvas paintings were used as a mask-background for the individual characters. Finally, the character sets, paintings, and display pieces were all incorporated into a printed booklet where the detailed process can be viewed.

From type to book
The design of the Spilt font began with making 21 unique acrylic pours on varying canvas sizes and incorporating different colors. To make the lettering, a custom, hand-dripped design of lettering and characters was used. After digitizing the base character set, the paintings were masked into each letter, number, and punctuation. Finally, I created the layout for the booklet, printed it, and bound it.
